Special Events

Here are some of the many Special Events we have been involved in over the years.

GB2VQJ - operating out of RAF Holmpton, the site of a massive underground nuclear bunker, as part of International Museums Weekend 2008. More details and photos here.
GB2EPC, commemorating the 2007 European Ploughing Championships. Photos of the event here.
GB300WES was the Special Event that saw us through the best part of 6 months during 2003. Celebrating the tercentenary of the birth of the founder of the Methodist Church, John Wesley. John was born and practised in our nearest town of Epworth, Lincs and so it was fitting that we helped the town in their celebrations.
Please click here to read about and see some pictures of the event as recorded by Royce Hunt (M0RHI).
GB2DTR - 2 June 2002. Our first Special Event in a long time and a case of relearning some old lessons. Celebrating the centenary of Public Transport, to the very day when the first Tram left the centre of Doncaster for Hexthorpe.
Our most famous Special Event which has a page all to itself here. GB617SQN was undertaken over a 5 day period and saw us record 1,643 contacts in 53 countries across the world.
616 (South Yorkshire) Sqn Royal Auxiliary Air Force was formed at Doncaster on 1st November 1938. It was mobilised as a Regular Squadron from it's base at Manston, Kent a few days before the outbreak of war. The Squadron distinguished itself flying Spitfires during the "Battle of Britain" and in July 1944, was the first squadron to be equipped with jet aircraft. The Squadron disbanded at RAF Finningley in 1957. To mark the 50th anniversary of their jet flying, we operated the station from RAF Finningley during the Air Show weekend of September 1994.
On the 22nd May 1194, whilst encamped in the Chateau of Thubeuf, Normandy, King Richard I (the Lionheart) put his seal to a document which allowed the town of "Danecastre" to claim borough status. 800 years later in 1994, Finningley Amateur Radio Society helped the Council celebrate by operating 8 stations throught the year, using the call sign GB800DON.
GB2AMN for Air Museum Newark was set up to help the museum celebrate being open to the public for 20 years. We operated the station from the radio operators positions in both the Avro Shackleton and Vickers Varsity aircraft.
